MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
June 18, 2013
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for
All Urban Consumers increased 0.1 percent in May after
decreasing 0.4 percent in April. The index for all items
less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in May after
increasing 0.1 percent in April.

Compensation costs up 0.3 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from
December 2012-March 2013. Over the year, compensation rose 1.8 percent, wages and
salaries 1.6 percent, and benefits 1.9 percent.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 175,000 in May, and the
unemployment rate was essentially unchanged at 7.6 percent. Employment
rose in professional and business services, food services and drinking
places, and retail trade.

The Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 0.5 percent in May. Prices for finished goods
fell 0.7 percent in April and 0.6 percent in March. Prices for finished goods less foods and
energy advanced 0.1 percent.

Productivity increased 0.5 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the
first quarter of 2013; unit labor costs decreased 4.3 percent (seasonally
adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 3.5
percent and unit labor costs decreased 10.0 percent.

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.2 percent in May, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings was unchanged and the CPI-U rose 0.1 percent. Real average weekly earnings fell 0.1 percent over the month.

Prices for U.S. imports declined 0.6 percent in May, after a 0.7 percent drop the previous
month. Falling fuel and nonfuel prices contributed to the decreases in both months. U.S.
export prices fell 0.5 percent in May following a decline of 0.7 percent in April.
