MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
July 16, 2008
On a seasonally adjusted basis the Consumer Price Index for
All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) rose 1.1 percent in June after
increasing 0.6 percent in May. The index for all items less
food and energy increased 0.3 percent, following an increase
of 0.2 percent in May.

Total compensation costs for civilian workers increased 0.7 percent, seasonally adjusted, from
December 2007 to March 2008. Last quarter, the increase was 0.8 percent. Over the year,
compensation costs rose 3.3 percent; the March 2007 12-month percent increase was 3.5 percent.

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to trend down in June (-62,000),
while the unemployment rate held at 5.5 percent. Employment continued
to fall in construction, manufacturing, and employment services, while
health care and mining added jobs. Average hourly earnings rose by 6
cents, or 0.3 percent, over the month.

The Producer Price Index for Finished Goods increased 1.8 percent in June, seasonally
adjusted. This rise followed advances of 1.4 percent in May and 0.2 percent in April.
The index for finished goods other than foods and energy increased 0.2 percent for the
second consecutive month.

Productivity increased 2.6 percent in the nonfarm business sector during the first quarter
of 2008 while unit labor costs rose 2.2 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In
manufacturing, productivity increased 3.6 percent in the first quarter of 2008, and unit
labor costs rose 4.2 percent.

Real average weekly earnings fell by 0.9 percent in June 2008. The change resulted from a 0.3 percent increase in average hourly earnings partially offset by a 1.2 percent increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). Average weekly hours were unchanged. Real earnings were down 2.4 percent from a year ago.

The U.S. Import Price Index rose 2.6 percent in June. The increase followed a 2.6
percent advance in May and was led by a continuing rise in petroleum prices. The price
index for exports increased 1.0 percent in June after rising 0.4 percent in May.
